- They've closed down a plant in California (link).
- They are buying (80,000 tons/year) chocolate from Callebaut and are partnering to open a plant in Monterrey, Mexico. This also allows Callebaut to produce a number of products in Hershey's Illinois plant (link).
- They bought an Indian chocolate company, Godrej, in hopes of buying into the South East Asian market (link).
I think Hershey's needs to go high end.
And not by just adding a high end bar. Hershey's needs to stop making the junk, and start making the real stuff. Make Hershey's a premium line. It's structure would fit easier. With the addition of Callebaut it seems likely that Hershey's is planning for some kind of general change of flavor or direction. This may be the direction it is headed.
I think the Trust needs to think long and hard about this. What kind of image do you want associated with Milton's name? This man who cared so much for the chocolate and the people who really need chocolate the most, children. Can the Trust look anybody in the eye and tell them that kids should be eating as much junk as they do? And when child obesity epidemic hits home to a Trust member's own children, will it make a difference then?
Apparently, Cadbury is very interested in buying Hershey. Read all about that here.
That's All for Now. Eat On!
